Why Is Michaelle Jean Going To Decide?

How come Harper is asking Jean to decide one way or the other? How come he isn’t asking Parliament?

Choosing the nuclear option, Harper has plunged us into a constitutional crisis. We could, however, have a plan in place and action taken on the economy now if he just allowed parliament to rule on the matter. We have a representative democracy – but Harper has chosen to give power to the Governor General instead. Disgraceful.

  1. Lets see, this is how it should progress and the black french chick does her job.

Harper asks to prorogue she says, why of course stevan, do you have the support of the ouse. Mais non ma cherie, den i cannot give you the prorogue, go back and get the support mon chere and we do the prorogue all nite long.

Harper goes back, he’s toasted, black french chick has 2 choices, election or hand over power. Will her seperatist leanings let her be guided, who knows, who cares.

  2. Your post is not quite accurate, Don. Like Sigh says: “Harper goes back, he’s toasted, black french chick has 2 choices, election or hand over power”. Either way, the black french chick has to make a big decision.

  3. True, cherenkov. However, she would make that decision on the basis of much historic precedent. For example, when Joe Clark fell, the GG offered Trudeau the PM job (he refused).

But, prorogue is a tool that has never been used in this way. Now, instead of a PM needing to prove that (s)he has the confidence of the House, he need only avoid that motion by requesting prorogue. So, from now until the end of time, we now have a new rule – Parliament has just lost a significant, historic power.

  4. Rock and a hard place for Michaelle. Either she sets a precedent by granting prorogue, or she sets a precedent by denying a formal request by the PM. The later is more dangerous to her office because it raises the question of interference in the matters of government by the monarch.
